Ineffective washing machine, noisy fridge or smelly dishwasher? Read on!

Renovating old white goods might be an odd hobby, but it's one I've maintained for most of my life--and I thought it was about time I shared some of my wisdom. Even if you're not interested in the inner workings of them like I am (and, to be honest, not many people are!), chances are high that you're still pretty reliant on the ones in your home. I've started this blog to share a few hints and tips for keeping your appliances running smoothly: what to look out for, what to avoid, and when to call in the professionals rather than trying to fix them up alone.

3 Problems With Your Dishwasher: The Air Gap

A dishwasher is now an essential appliance in any Australian home. However, with general wear and tear, your dishwasher may occasionally develop a fault. This article is going to explore one particular fault which may affect your dishwasher - a problem with the air gap. The air gap in your dishwasher allows air to enter the appliance as the water drains away after a wash cycle has been completed. If the air gap develops a problem, you may notice that it is difficult to open the dishwasher door due to the partial vacuum which has been created as the water drains away and isn't replaced by air. You may also find that water leaks from your appliance. Below is a guide to 3 possible reasons your air gap may be malfunctioning.

Blockages

If the air gap pipe becomes blocked, it can cause problems with the appliance. Blockages can occur when soap, food particles and other debris are washed back into the air gap. This can cause problems with the drainage of water which can result in your appliance flooding. An appliance service will be able to clean out the air gap pipe and ensure that the dishwasher is operating properly.

Knockout plug

If you have only just purchased your dishwasher and it develops a problem, this may be due to the fact that the knockout plug is still in position. This plug is normally removed once the dishwasher has been constructed to allow the air gap to open. However, occasionally, this plug is left in position by mistake. Because of this, you may find that it is difficult to open the dishwasher door. If you are unsure how to locate and remove the knockout plug, you should contact an appliance service.

Leaks

If the air gap develops a leak, you may find that water begins to leak out of the dishwasher as water is forced out of the air gap pipe during draining. The most likely cause of this problem is a damaged seal. You should carry out a full inspection of the air gap seals and replace any which are faulty. If you do not feel confident doing this, you should call in an appliance service.

If you are experiencing problems with your dishwasher, or you would like to find out more about the services offered by an appliance service, you should contact a local company today for further help and advice.
